The latest installment of the Thursday Murder Club series by Richard Osman, The Impossible Fortune, kicks off with Joyce’s daughter Joanna getting married. The wedding turns out to be pleasant in the sense that the best man’s life is threatened, giving even Elizabeth – who had been spending the last year in quiet mourning – a new spark of energy and an interest in the case.

The Thursday Murder Club series is definitely worth checking out. I don’t know if “slow crime” is a recognized genre, but that’s exactly what these represent. Osman typically spends an entire chapter providing background on new characters, and cliffhangers between the short chapters are rare. Sometimes, for instance, Ron just has to stay and play with his grandson Kendrick – even if it requires him to peel himself off the bathroom floor with a brutal hangover. Still, you want to devour the book, but then again you don’t, because then it would be over sooner. 📚
